Maasai Mara: when to go, and what you'll actually see
Everyone wants to know one thing about the Maasai Mara: when is the migration? Fair question. But there's so much more to the Mara than wildebeest crossings, and choosing a quieter month can give you a completely different — and arguably better — trip.
July to October — the famous months
This is the Great Migration window. River crossings on the Mara River, predators everywhere, and yes, a lot of vehicles at the prime sightings. If a crossing is on your bucket list, book early (we're talking 6–12 months ahead for the best camps).
November to March — green season magic
Short rains in November leave the Mara emerald green and almost empty of other vehicles. Predator action is excellent because the herds settle, and rates at the lodges drop significantly. Birding is at its peak.
What we recommend
If it's your first time and you want the spectacle — aim for August or September and book early.
If you've done a safari before and want depth, photography time and value — come in February or June.
