A traditional dhow on the white sand of Diani Beach

Diani vs Watamu vs Lamu: which Kenyan coast is right for you?

Diani — easy, lively, family-ready

Diani has the postcard beach: powder-white sand, turquoise water, palm trees. It's also the most developed of the three — plenty of beach resorts, restaurants, kitesurf schools and even tandem skydiving. Easiest to combine with a Mara or Tsavo safari via a short flight to Ukunda.

Watamu — quieter, with a marine park at your doorstep

Watamu feels smaller and slower than Diani. The marine national park is one of the best snorkelling spots in East Africa, and you can do turtle conservation visits with Local Ocean. Great for couples and quiet retreats.

Lamu — Swahili soul, no roads, dhows everywhere

Lamu Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. No cars, donkeys instead, coral-stone houses with carved doors, and a rhythm that pulls you in. Best for travellers who want culture and atmosphere over poolside cocktails.
