Lake Nakuru: pink flamingos, big rhinos, one perfect day trip

Lake Nakuru National Park earned its fame in the 80s when over a million flamingos lined the shore. Numbers fluctuate now with the lake's rising waters, but Nakuru is still one of Kenya's most photogenic parks — and one of the best places in the country to see white and black rhino in the same morning.

How to do it as a day trip

Leave Nairobi by 6:30am. You'll be at the park gate by 9am. Plan a full morning game drive, a packed picnic lunch at Baboon Cliff with the lake views, and an afternoon loop before driving back. You'll be home in Nairobi by sunset.

What you'll see

Black and white rhino, Rothschild's giraffe (one of the few places in Kenya), lion, leopard if you're lucky, buffalo, waterbuck, and clouds of pink along the shore.
